The Sainsbury Centre Learning Team has been collaborating with children to discuss what the sea means to them and how they feel about the current ecological crisis taking place in the Earth’s oceans. We have also been thinking about actions that we can take to make a positive difference.
In May 2025, young artists aged 7-11 worked with Johann DonDaniel to create two collaborative soundscapes in response to these ideas. They spent the day writing and performing messages to the sea, recording river sounds in the Sculpture Park to use as filters, and digitally editing their own soundscapes.

Dear Sea
Inspired by Maggie Hambling’s artworks You are the Sea and Wall of Water VIII, they created energetic and colourful paintings to accompany their audio work, Dear Sea.
Dear Prime Minister
At the end of the workshop, these young artists decided that they would like to take action by sending a further message to the adults who have responsibility for protecting the seas. This resulted in a further protest recording, Dear Prime Minister
