Outward Bound
Michael Kidner
Life Story
In this print different variations of a lattice pattern are layered in a geometric grid, creating a dynamic optical effect. Michael Kidner began experimenting with multiple lattice-based patterns in his paintings, drawings and prints in the mid-1970s. He described these patterns as giving space a visible presence:
‘Prior to 1974, I had been thinking of space as a void. This view allowed constructions to be conceived free of interference from the void. I chose the lattice to give the void a visible presence. Although treating it as an empty space, I could show that it conceals a very powerful source of energy in search of an equilibrium.’ [1]
