Charles Biederman
Life Story
A dynamic relationship is established between the vertical and horizontal elements of this abstract print, marked out in bold, flat colour. Charles Biederman had been concerned with how art could engage with the structural processes underpinning the natural world, rather than its appearance, since the 1930s. Best known for his abstract geometric reliefs and theoretical writing, Biederman was an influential figure in the development of Constructivism.
This print was part of Blank Page, a limited-edition portfolio of artworks and writing, produced in six volumes between 1988 and 1991. Biederman’s print featured in the final volume, which included work by César Domela, Anthony Hill, Michael Kidner, Francois Morellet and others.
