Bay of Naples
Léopold Survage
Life Story
Horizontal, diagonal, vertical and cross-hatched lines mark out an abstract impression of the Bay of Naples in this print. The unusual composition has a geometric, dream-like quality that reflects Léopold Survage’s early engagement with Cubism and Surrealism. Born in Russia in 1879, Survage settled in France in 1909 where he developed an intuitive form of Cubism, informed by his interest in film and abstract animation. The influential poet and art critic Guillaume Apollinaire was an early supporter of Survage’s work and wrote an experimental catalogue preface for an exhibition of his paintings in 1917.
