Composition

Born in Milan in 1927, Veronesi made his first prints in a sub Futurist style. He moved to Paris and frequented Léger’s studio, and became a member of Abstraction – Création, as Veronesi’s art gradually became abstract through 1932 – 33. His work of this period reveals his study of Gris, Gleizes, and Arp. He showed his first abstract paintings at the Galleria Il Milione in Milan in 1932.

In the mid 1930s, Veronesi became interested in the products of the Bauhaus. Particularly important for him were Vantongerloo and Moholy-Nagy. Veronesi followed Moholy-Nagy into photography, an interest that he was to maintain throughout his career. He also worked on experimental films, and undertook research into colour theory. This is the first work by an Italian artists working in the Constructivist mode and the donation came about due to the interest in the Sainsbury Centre exhibition, Rhythm and Geometry.
