A harmonious relationship is established between a series of rectangular forms in this monochrome print. It relates to Alan Johnston’s broader concern with spatial relationships and his intuitive use of abstract geometric forms, often in dialogue with architecture. The composition echoes Johnston’s paintings and wall drawings from this period, which combine his interests in surface texture and the reconfiguration of architectural space.

This print is part of a portfolio published to coincide with the exhibition Between Dimensions at the Curwen Gallery, London in 1990. Johnston was one of eight artists selected by Mel Gooding to contribute to the exhibition and portfolio, which also featured work by Adam Barker-Mill, Michael Kidner, Ian Tyson, John Carter, Christine Hatt, Stanislav Kolíbal and Gary Woodley.
