Rational Concepts: 7 English Artists Portfolio
Anthony Hill
Life Story
In a statement accompanying this striking abstract print, Anthony Hill described the composition as playing on ‘hexorientation: silhouettes of cubes and fragments of cubes appear and disappear in different ways’. Hill was fascinated by the variation that could be achieved by taking mathematical systems as a starting point for his artworks. Configurations of lines connected at 120-degree angles to suggest open hexagonal forms feature in a series of Hill’s works in the 1970s and relate to his interest in graph theory.
This print was created for the Rational Concepts portfolio, which included seven screen prints produced in an edition of 100, by artists associated with constructive art in England. The other artists represented in the portfolio are Norman Dilworth, Malcolm Hughes, Peter Lowe, Kenneth Martin, Jeffrey Steele and Gillian Wise.
