Bowl
Ulla Hansen
Life Story
Based in Denmark, Ulla Hanssen’s ceramics combine the simplicity of Danish design with ancient ceramic traditions. The form of this bowl is influenced by Chinese ceramics. The rim features pulled lobes, made immediately after throwing and is a common design detail of ceramics from the Song Dynasty (960 – 1279).
Hanssen accentuates the rim with a dark painted line which saturates the edge and contrasts the pale body. The circular line of the rim marries the loosely drawn circle on the interior with the exterior. The vertical brown markings vary in intensity, sometimes only a trace appears and this softness is echoed in the pale hues of green ash-glaze. Hanssen fires her work in an electric kiln often firing the same work several times. [1]
