Bowl
Gordon Baldwin
Life Story
The jagged and cut rim of this handbuilt bowl is a counterpoint to the spareness, symmetry and stillness of its black copper-oxide slip body. A series of abstract linear bands trace the exterior of the rim and appear on the interior – this interplay between exterior and interior is characteristic of Gordon Baldwin’s work.
Baldwin initially trained as a painter and studied ceramics at the Central School of Art and Design in the 1950s. His unique approach to clay is informed by landscapes, modern music and literature. He is a major figure in British studio ceramics and his practice demonstrates the sculptural and contemplative qualities of clay.
