Can the Seas Survive Us?
Get involved with our new ‘Space for Dialogue’
It’s easy to feel anxious and overwhelmed by the urgent environmental challenges we now face, particularly when so much public debate takes place online or in the media and is marked by conflict and terrifying headlines. To address this, we’ve developed a dialogue space to accompany our upcoming season: Can the Seas Survive Us? This circular, 30-seat space offers a calm and intimate environment where visitors of all ages, backgrounds, and beliefs can come together on an equal footing for constructive dialogue. Our aim is to create a kind, hopeful atmosphere, based on empathy and listening, that can deepen our understanding of the urgent issues affecting our seas and our coastal communities. Ultimately, we want this to be an empowering space that leads to new pathways for collective action.
Watch this space for our programme of free public dialogues. These will run through April, May and June to accompany the upcoming exhibitions: A World of Water, and Darwin in Paradise Camp: Yuki Kihara. When not in use for facilitated events, visitors are welcome to use the space for quiet reflection, or informal discussions using our ‘Cards for Conversation’.
Would you like to collaborate?
We know that there is already a lot of great work going on to facilitate constructive and compassionate dialogue around climate change. The Sainsbury Centre would love to hear from groups or organisations who might be interested in co-facilitating dialogues with us in the space. Please get in touch if you are interested in arranging a speculative chat, or if you are aware of any great initiatives that you think we should know about.
Please email: SainsburyCentreLearning@uea.ac.uk with ‘Space for Dialogue’ as the email subject, no later than 10 March 2025.
The Space for Dialogue is part of a six-month season of interlinked exhibitions and events that explore the question Can the Seas Survive Us?
