Acquired by the Wellcome institute in 1931 from a sale in Paris of the ethnographic collections formerly belonging to surrealist writers Paul Eluard and Andre Breton.
Donated to the Sainsbury Centre, University of East Anglia by the Wellcome Trust in 1981.
