Rational Concepts: 7 English Artists Portfolio
Kenneth Martin
Life Story
The interconnecting lines in this print have evolved from a system that Kenneth Martin developed in the late 1960s to explore relationships between chance and order. Martin applied a set of rules based on number sequences and randomly selected cards to connect points on a grid. He was fascinated by the unpredictable compositions that this system generated and used it to create a series of drawings, prints and paintings.
This print was created for the Rational Concepts portfolio, which included seven screen prints produced in an edition of 100, by artists associated with constructive art in England. The other artists represented in the portfolio are Malcolm Hughes, Anthony Hill, Peter Lowe, Norman Dilworth, Jeffrey Steele and Gillian Wise.
