Head of a Haniwa Figure
Life Story
Provenance
11/01/2024 Nicole Rousmaniere viewed this object and advised that the object has received significant conservation work. This can be viewed under UV light. Beard looks to have been restored using different coloured clay to original, red ochre looks to have been reapplied, visible breaks to side sections. Haniwa were mainly recovered from the Tokyo area, from the sites now used as Shinto shrines. The head would have been attached to a ceramic body and stood as a figure, many haniwa were sold and left Japan during the Meiji period. (Vanessa Tothill)
