Join us for this special event to mark the end of the ground-breaking exhibition Empowering Art: Indigenous Creativity and Activism from North America’s Northwest Coast.
Ts’msyen artist Morgan Asoyuf will join us from British Columbia to share her personal reflections on the exhibition, drawing on the social and political context in which the work was made and to think about the role of art and activism in the Northwest Coast today.
A multidisciplinary artist, Morgan works across jewellery, engraving and photography. Her photography series Royal Portrait, a series contemplating Indigenous northwest coast ideals, is currently on display at the Sainsbury Centre. The portraits depict community leaders and activists working on issues like climate justice, missing and murdered Indigenous women, and protesting the expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline, pointing back to an honoured past and forward to an innovative, autonomous indigenous future.
