Abstract geometric shapes have been carefully arranged in this print to create a sense of dynamism and harmony. John Carter moved towards playful investigations of varying shapes in his work in the 1980s, often taking the square as a starting point. The divided parallelogram that dominates this print appears in other works by Carter from this period, including the abstract constructed plywood ‘wall objects’ that he is well known for.

This print is part of a portfolio published to coincide with the exhibition Between Dimensions at the Curwen Gallery, London in 1990. Carter was one of eight artists selected by Mel Gooding to contribute to the exhibition and portfolio, which also featured work by Adam Barker-Mill, Christine Hatt, Michael Kidner, Ian Tyson, Alan Johnston, Stanislav Kolíbal and Gary Woodley.
