Bottle with monkey
Life Story
The vessel is covered with the typical Chorrera orange red slip, except for the face of the monkey, which is painted white. Below the angle of the body of the vessel are faint traces of a design incorporating lines, step frets and small dots produced by a technique which has etched, scraped or corroded away the original red slip. A similar monkey bottle is illustrated by Lathrap et al. (1975: no. 357).

Purchased by the Sainsbury Centre, University of East Anglia from John A. Stokes Jnr., New York, on the advice of Robert Sainsbury in 1981 out of income from the Sainsbury Purchasing Fund.
