Taking inspiration from objects in the collection in the Sainsbury Centre and from Ernest Hemingway’s challenge to write “one true sentence”, we will look at ways of getting what we see in the world onto the page. We’ll investigate beautiful and challenging artworks and look at texts by writers like James Baldwin, Michael Ondaatje, Penelope Lively and Virginia Woolf and see what we can learn about writing with emotional, philosophical and physical truth. About what we might mean by truth. And about writing resonant sentences that reveal something about the world.

At the end of the course there will be an opportunity to contribute to an anthology – and throughout we will have the simple joy of engaging with wonderful literature and art, and of getting together to talk about them.

Sam Jordison is a publisher and writer. He is co-director and editor at the award winning independent publisher, Galley Beggar Press (publisher of writers like Lucy Ellmann, Alex Pheby and Preti Taneja.) He has written for most national newspapers and regularly writes about books for The Guardian. He is also the author of several works of non-fiction including Literary London, Enemies Of The People and the best-selling Crap Towns series.
